Door Supervisor vs Security Guard Licence: Which Should You Choose?
These are the two most popular SIA licences, and people regularly buy the wrong one — then pay again to upgrade. The difference is simple once explained, so here is a clear comparison to help you choose correctly the first time.
The short answer
A Door Supervisor licence lets you do everything a Security Guard can, plus front-of-house and licensed-premises work. A Security Guard licence does not cover door supervision. So the Door Supervisor licence is more versatile — which is why most people choose it despite the slightly higher cost.

Choose Security Guard if…

Most people should choose Door Supervisor
Because it covers Security Guard work too, includes first aid, and pays more on average, the small extra cost usually pays for itself quickly. The main reason to pick Security Guard is if you are certain you only want static guarding.
What about upgrading later?
If you take the Security Guard course and later want to work the doors, you would need to complete additional training to obtain the Door Supervisor licence — so you end up paying twice. Starting with Door Supervisor avoids that. This is the single most common mistake we see, and it is entirely avoidable.
